Abstract:This article investigates the contracting costs of making mergers and acquisitions (M&A), develops a theoretical model of the information asymmetry involved, and indicates how buying companies use several mechanisms to reduce such asymmetry by using a sample of over 3000 M&As. The findings indicate that buyers in cross-border situations are more likely to employ mechanisms to influence information asymmetry, while the employment of these mechanisms has an effect on contracting costs.
