Abstract:This study develops a North-South product cycle model where innovation, imitation and the foreign direct investment (FDI) flow are all endogenously determined. In the model, strengthened intellectual property right (IPR) protection in the South decreases the rate of imitation, which increases the FDI flow. Indeed, the increased FDI more than offsets the decline in the production undertaken by Southern imitators, resulting in raise of the South's share of the global basket of goods. Moreover, while multinationals execute higher prices than Southern imitators, Southern workers' real wages increase while those of Northern workers fall.
