Abstract:The results of recent research suggests that management control systems (MCS) may improve performance when there is a high level of task uncertainty. However, a second stream of research shows conflicting results, claiming that MCSs risk undermining the intrinsic motivation required for effective performance in those settings. To make sense out of it, an integrative model summarized in 15 propositions is developed in this article. The effectiveness of the solution is demonstrated in activities called large-scale collaborative creativity (LSCC). It's function as a tool for enriching the understanding of motivation in settings where creativity and/or coordination demands are less pressing is also illustrated.
