Tiivistelmä (eng): | During this project different component alternatives for window manufacturing have been studied. At the same time as a new finger jointing line in Ala has been started up, the suitability of finger jointed blanks and pros and cons in comparison to other alternatives have been investigated. The market situation has been analysed, both by interviewing customers -window manufacturers -and by analysing numerical data of production and sales in Sweden and Finland. Product properties have been studied by practical testing. Overall product quality requirements have been discussed with 10 persons at 4 different window manufacturing companies. The most important thing for the window producers, according to the interviews, is to be able to provide their customers a window with perfect surface and based upon this finding accelerated weathering tests have been conducted on 5 different groups of painted and profiled window components. Finger jointed material from Ala, Honkalahti and Viljandi and also solid components with and without knots were tested. During the weathering process, all defects on the testing pieces were counted and documented. When looking at severe defects, such defects that have to be corrected in some way, the Honkalahti material was significantly better than the Viljandi, Ala and Knot material. The pieces from Honkalahti had on an average 48 % fewer sides with severe defects than the solids with knots. The development of amounts of defects over time was about the same for all materials, making the initial quality the vital factor. After the last weathering cycle, 63 % of the sides of the Ala material had severe defects, 50 % of the Viljandi material, 48 % of the solids with knots and 18 % of the Honkalahti material. The knot-free material had no severe defects at all. Continuous grain structure proved to be a good solution for window manufacturing. The material with continuous grain structure had increased numbers of visible and elevated joints. Also the overall quality was lowest on these products. |
