Tiivistelmä (fin): | 3D-virtuaalimaailmoja, kuten Second Lifea, on alettu käyttää viime vuosina akateemisen opetuksen välineinä perinteisempien ekaopetuksen muotojen rinnalla. |
Tiivistelmä (eng): | During the last few years, 3D virtual worlds -such as Second Life -have been introduced among the tools of academic education alongside with more traditional forms of distance learning. In this master's thesis, a virtual laboratory and in there an experiment was designed. In the experiment, decarboxylation and decarbonylation reactions (in short, DC reactions) of aliphatic carboxylic acids are examined, and the user is supposed to find out which structural factor best explains the differences seen in the reaction rates of the acids. To construct the content of the experiment, (1) the properties of science-related learning environments in Second Life and (2) the DC reactions of fatty acids were studied. In addition, (3) the reactions of fatty acids were compared to those of multifunctional acids. Finally, (4) the literature was searched for the empirical data needed for the virtual experiment. The technical implementation to Second Life was not a part of this thesis. Of the existing science-related learning environments, most were observed to be passive 3D exhibitions that do not interact with the user. Only about 10 simulation-type environments requiring the user's active participation were found. By comparing the usability of these simulations, it was concluded that, for example, the use of the technical interface elements of Second Life should be avoided. DC reactions are useful as synthetic methods, and besides that in the industry, where they offer a way to transform fatty acids into renewable fuel. On a qualitative level, the rate of spontaneous decarboxylation is explained by the pKaH value of the immediate reaction product. For instance, malonic acid decarboxylates easily, as an enolate ion is formed in the reaction (pKaH ca. 22). On the other hand, fatty acids do not, since the respective product would be an alkyl anion (pKaH ca. 50). Thus, fatty acids do not decarboxylate spontaneously, and the known reactions proceed either via radical mechanisms or need very high temperatures. Decarbonylation reactions, in which the carboxylic acid eliminates carbon monoxide (CO) and water instead of carbon dioxide (CO2), require transition metal catalysis. |
