Tiivistelmä (eng): | The use of wireless local area networks (WLAN) for networking has become very widespread. This is primarily because they provide an easy to access cable-free network that can be connected to while on the move and provide access to fixed networks. Further more the use of ad hoc networking has also become the preferred way of setting up networks since it is quick and eliminates the need of extra stations for centralized connectivity. In this thesis we study methods to improve the performance of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) by employing dynamic channel selection. The work that has been done in this regard focuses on the IEEE 802.11b standard and results in the implementation of a testbed that provides the basis to study the effect of channel selection on the performance of a communication link between two wireless stations which are connected to one another in ad hoc mode. The thesis helps us to understand the usefulness of such a scheme and describes how much improvement in performance namely throughput is achieved under a select set of traffic trends. A Channel Selection Tool has been developed to do this study. There is a possibility to implement an algorithm of choice in this tool while it provides the mechanism to change and set new channels in the wireless network. The current algorithm though simple helps us achieve significant results. This has allowed us to understand the key concepts in such mechanisms and we are better able to identify the drawbacks and possible advantages that such an implementation can bring in the area of study. |
