Tiivistelmä (eng): | With the commercial launch of UMTS networks, 3G has finally arrived on the scene with its wide range of services. All the hard work put into the development and design of this system over the years is being put to test. The radio network design, used for network implementation and configuration, is based on planning tools, employing propagation models. The classical planning tools and methods can never truly simulate the complex multi-dimensional nature of a radio signal, which experiences multiple reflections and refractions and variable attenuation. The behavior of the implemented network will therefore be different from the predictions, in some cases to a surprising large extent. The only way of finding out the true RF network performance is to take measurements using drive tests and then by post-processing the measurement logs to produce statistics and plots. This is exactly what this thesis strives to accomplish. This work covers the initial tuning and optimization of a UMTS network, describing the tools, methods and processes used. The focus is how to do the measurement in a live network, process and analyze them to get the RF performance of the network. The problems in the network are identified along with the probable causes, solutions are proposed to rectify them, which are then implemented and verified, and their effect on the network performance is investigated. |
