Tiivistelmä (eng): | In this thesis, modular product structures of wind power converters have been examined. The aim of the study was to examine the benefits that modular product structures could bring to wind power converters. Power converters for wind power applications have only recently become volume products. Earlier, wind power has generally been considered as a small and experimental prototype market. However, the growth of wind power has been remarkable in recent years. To mention an example, the Chinese wind power market has grown at an annual average rate of 115% during the last 3 years. In 2009, 38 000 MW of new wind power capacity was installed globally. Due to the recent growth of the wind power market, the significance of product structures has now been emphasized. This is why modularity has become an interesting topic concerning wind power products. The thesis is made for The Switch Drive Systems, which manufactures wind power converters and other new energy applications. The starting point of this thesis was to analyze the current variety of wind power converter products, and how the variety could be managed in a more systematically manner. Modularity was found to provide a systematically approach to variety management and product structures. Modularity was first studied in the theoretical part of the thesis using design science literature. Most of the sources were scientific articles and dissertations related to the topic. As a practical implementation, a new functional module for over voltage protection of the wind power converter was designed. Additionally, modularity aspects of the current products were analyzed. Based on this study, a new approach to modularity concerning wind power converters is suggested. Modularity should be seen as a tool to support product configurability and variety management. Modularity would then help to manage complexity in both the product and the operations of the company. |
