Tiivistelmä (eng):The idea was to figure out how to choose an engine for underground use now that the emission legislation for work machinery engines are tightening in the near future, and hopefully come up with a repeatable method to choose an engine.
In order to clarify what the emission legislation is about, the legislation in question is presented, and the technology involved is also presented.

It turned out that only the EU is requiring engines conforming to the most recent emission legislation to be used in underground mining.
Some of the legislation regarding internal combustion engines in underground mining in the rest of the world is also presented, and the diesel fuel quality legislation is also presented, as the sulfur content limits the use of aftertreatment devices on modern engines.

Some of the companies producing non-road engines and their products are briefly listed.

The underground hard rock mining vehicles are briefly presented.

The engine choosing based on the engine data given by engine manufacturers is presented.
Some attention was paid to the engine torque converter combination and the lack of "lug-up" torque curves on the engine data sheets, and how that affects the engine choosing process.

It was concluded that some sort of "lug-up" torque curve data would have to be available, both that needed by the vehicle and that delivered by the engines.
Some ideas were presented on how to figure out the "lug-up" torque curve needed by a vehicle, based on the use of CAN-bus engine control.

Also the lack of information regarding smoke/particle producing tendency of engines was acknowledged, and a basic way how the smoke producing tendency might be presented was given.
A way how to figure out what the limit would be for an engines smokiness was not given.
