Tiivistelmä (eng): | Ever since their introduction less than a decade ago, modern instant messaging systems have experienced a massive growth in users. Meanwhile, text messaging has revolutionized the use of mobile phone, bringing mobile messaging forward as a new source of revenue for service providers. Now service providers look to enrich mobile messaging by bringing the combination of presence awareness and real-time messaging by bringing the combination of presence awareness and real-time messaging, that is instant messaging, to the mobile environment. However, several restrictions are inflicted on mobile services due to the differences of mobile and wireline environments. The instant messaging standards destined for mobile networks must be able to adapt to these restrictions. IMPS (Instant Messaging and Presence Service) is an instant messaging system designed especially for mobile environments. Another instant messaging system, the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) based SIMPLE (SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions) service, will be introduced in forthcoming third generation (3G) networks as part of the 3G multimedia services. This thesis evaluates the applicability of IMPS and SIMPLE in mobile networks and presents the strengths and weaknesses of the standards in comparison to each other. The architecture of IMPS was found to be quite simple while SIMPLE is based on a more complex structure utilizing several different protocols and data formats. Despite their differences, both architectures are very scalable. The comparison also found the security services of SIMPLE to be better than those of IMPS. However, SIMPLE has problems with proxy traversal while IMPS is able to traverse proxies without problems. The performance of SIMPLE was considered slightly better than IMPS's when it comes to bandwidth usage and delays, although the performance of IMPS is more than adequate for mobile environments as well. The level of extensibility and interoperability is equally high for both IMPS and SIMPLE. In conclusion, IMPS is easy to deploy due to its simple architecture, while considerable effort and resources are required to deploy the more complex SIMPLE service. On the other hand, SIMPLE enables a range of other multimedia services to be launched based on the same framework. As SIMPLE offers stronger security services, it is a better alternative for transporting business-critical information. In contrast, IMPS enables the creation of a global instant messaging service spanning both mobile networks and the wireline Internet, while SIMPLE is unable to accomplish the same due to proxy traversal problems. All in all, both services conform well to the requirements of mobile networks. |
