Tiivistelmä (eng): The thesis looks at urban strategy, and then focuses on building design with construction and detail development.
It can be also considered as an experiment into how a slight intervention can reorganize and affect the character of open spaces in the city centre.

The Tram pavilion is situated on the plaza surrounding the Havis Amanda Fountain, at the junction of the Esplanadi and Market Square where the most popular events on May Day Eve take place each year in Helsinki.
This area is most lively in summer when citizens and tourists can enjoy the weather and various outdoor activities.
However, the unfriendly winter renders the space unused, emphasizing the heavy traffic.
The existing tram stops also break the continuum between the site and surroundings.
The proposed Tram pavilion, which comprises of a coffee shop, info kiosk for tourism and tram stop, makes use of the site all year round and re-enforces the character of the plaza from which the adjoining open spaces can be more appreciated.

The urban strategy is influenced by field investigations of open spaces in the surrounding.
The scale, lightness and materiality of the pavilion are determined with consideration to the surrounding city structure.
Though compact in size, the structure deals with the issues of traffic, commercial space and public space as well as careful consideration of the construction and materiality.

In terms of lightness and transparency, timber construction suits the design strategy and gives the possibility to shorten and simplify on-site assembly.
The construction consists of wooden roof and glass enclosure underneath.
By combining a rigid roof with tilted pillars, it is possible to form a stable structural system without the diagonal bracing typically found in ordinary light-frame construction.
The wavy roof is built of double-curved glulam and four layers of finger-jointed wooden strips in different orientations to achieve a rigid structure with a soft appearance.
The outer layer can be replaced when needed, at the same time the protected inner layer maintains the capacity of roof structure.
