Tiivistelmä (eng): | This master's thesis studies data center waste heat recovery possibilities. The aim is to discover the technically and economically best way to utilize the waste heat from a data center. This paper also investigates the effect of the waste heat utilization on data center energy efficiency and energy efficiency indicators. The results of this work are based on a simulation model and on optimization combined to the model. Optimization solves the optimal temperature set points of cold aisle, hot aisle, cooling water supply temperature and the temperature difference between cooling water supply and return temperature. Optimization is also used to study the effect of variables on the life-cycle-costs of the system. Based on the results, the least expensive option is a system where the waste heat is utilized in district heating network to supply or return side according to the outside temperature. The most economical option provides savings of more than 4,2 million euros compared to the reference case in which the cooling is produced by chillers that use free cooling. The life-cycle-costs of the most economical cooling system are 63 % lower than in the reference case. ERE and ERF values, that are used to measure the energy efficiency of a data center, are significantly better in cooling solutions based on heat pumps than in the reference case, because ERE and ERF also note the waste heat utilization as a factor improving the energy efficiency. The PUE value of the optimized system is worse than in the reference case, because PUE does not account the utilization of waste heat. In models that use heat pump to utilize waste heat to district heating, the cold aisle temperature should be set to 19-20 ËC, the hot aisle temperature to 34-35 ËC, the cooling water supply temperature to 15-17 ° C and the temperature difference between cooling water supply and return to 9-10 ËC. |
