| Tiivistelmä (eng): | The Vaasa region is known as a leading energy cluster in the Nordic countries and Europe. The purpose of this thesis was to find the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) within the liquid natural gas (LNG) industry, specifically within the field of small- and mid-scale LNG infrastructure technologies in the Kvarken region. This was done in four parts, by: presenting the technologies and processes used within the field of small- and mid-scale LNG infrastructure, reviewing some well-to-wheel and well-to-propeller analyses of LNG value chains and comparing them to conventional oil-based value chains, mapping the companies within the field of LNG in the region and other relevant valuable partners, and finally by inter-viewing relevant actors within the area. Findings from these four parts were then gathered into a SWOT analysis where then solutions to some of the weaknesses and threats were pre-sented by utilizing the strengths and opportunities. The main findings presented in this thesis were the need for three different things in the region: larger portfolio of education within the field of LNG, an extended LNG distribution system, and further cooperation between compa-nies and schools. Education about LNG related topics was not found to be sufficient within educational establishments in the area, and therefore companies have a hard time finding the relevant know-how from students in the area. A distribution system in the form of the Midway Alignment project is planned in the area, which includes a LNG terminal, but currently LNG distribution infrastructure in the area is nearly non-existent. A LNG distribution system in the area could among other things work as a testing platform for companies, provide additional value for LNG education and increase interest towards LNG in the area. It was also found that extended cooperation, either in the form of a consortium, or simply further sharing of in-formation by seminars and brainstorming sessions, would be beneficial for the companies and educational facilities in the region, especially as the industry has a symbiosis within the LNG ecosystem at this moment. |
| Tiivistelmä (swe): | Vasaregionen är känd som en av Nordens och Europas ledande energi-kluster. Syftet med detta diplomarbete är att hitta styrkorna, svagheterna, möjligheterna och hoten (SWOT) mot flytande naturgas (LNG) industrin, specifikt för små och medelstora infrastruktur teknologier, i Kvarkenregionen. Detta undersöktes i fyra skeden: användning av små och medelstora flytande naturgas teknologier och processer i infrastruktur användning undersöktes, skillnaden mellan flytande naturgas och olje-värde kedjor jämfördes med hjälp av well-to-wheel och well-to-propeller analyser, företag inom flytande naturgas branschen kartlagdes inom Kvarkenregionen och andra relevanta bolag inom branschen presenterades, och till sist intervjuades relevanta aktörer inom området. Resultaten från dessa fyra områden kombinerades till en SWOT-analys var lösningar för svagheterna och hoten söktes genom att utnyttja styrkorna och möjligheterna. De viktigaste resultaten från detta diplomarbete fanns inom tre olika områden: behov av en bredare utbildning om flytande naturgas inom universitet och yrkeshögskolor i Kvarkenregionen, ett flytande naturgas distributionssystem i området, och mera samarbete mellan företag och skolor inom området. Skolningen gällande flytande naturgas inom Kvarkenregionen är för tillfället mycket knapp, vilket försvårar bolagens finnande av know-how inom branschen. Ett flytande naturgas distributionssystem är i planerna i området genom Midway Alignment-projektet, vilket skulle inkludera en flytande naturgas terminal i Vasa, men för tillfället är distributionssystemet obefintligt. Ett distributionssystem inom regionen kunde t.ex. fungera som en testplattform för bolag i regionen, ge mervärde för skolning inom flytande naturgas branschen eller överlag öka intresset om flytande naturgas i regionen. Ökandet av samarbete mellan bolag och skolor, var det sedan i form av ett konsortium eller endast ökande av informationsutbyte genom reguljära seminarier och brainstorming-tillfällen, skulle även förbättra skolornas och bolagens station inom branschen, speciellt p.g.a. symbiosen som råder mellan bolag inom regionen för tillfället. |
