| Tiivistelmä: | The factors which are leading to a resurgence of interest in small hydroelectric power stations are discussed as well as the obstacles, both institutional and psychological which need to be overcome. The awareness of environmental concern about energy developments is discussed, together with the need for more rational methods of economic comparisons of hydro-schemes with other energy sources. The problems associated with identifying the extent of the resource world-wide are considered and an attempt at quantification is made. |
