Tiivistelmä:A study of the process of performance appraisal in a Fortune 100 company revealed that managers often have a more favourable view than their subordinates do. It is suggested that having a technically sound appraisal system and procedure is no guarantee that the process will be effective. To be effective, managers and subordinates must have a shared perception of the purposes and function of the process and a shared belief that it is useful to them on an individual basis. The following other guidelines are also recommended: assess the effectiveness of the current system; arrange appraisal skills training; start with effective performance planning; provide resources necessary to link pay to performance.
