Tiivistelmä: | This paper addresses some critical issues in the risk-return literature, especially the use of the prospect theory, and provides remedies for the treatment of the reference point and risk attitudes measurement. The firm's previous year's performance is the reference point for it's annual performance evaluation, an approach which is consistent with the prospect theory. The results of all firms that had enough data available for testing uniformly support Bowman's hypothesis: firm will be risk taking if their performance levels are below the reference points. This paper defines a firm's performance reference point in a way consistent with the prospect theory, explicitly incorporates risk attitude as a construct and measures it, and uses the firm as the unit of analysis. |
