Tiivistelmä:Real GDP in the fifteen member states of the European Union is estimated to have been flat in the first quarter of 1997. The stagnation in the activity was due to no growth in private consumption and a 0.1% fall in mixed capital formation. Output was only 1.3% higher in the first three months of 1997 compared to the first quarter of 1996. Most member states experienced a slowdown in activity in 1996 and overall EU GDP growth slowed to 1.6% in 1996. Inflation within the EU has been converging. Unemployment remains high in most of Europe. Prospects for the European economy in 1997 and 1998 are promising, as a consequence of healthy export performance.
