| Tiivistelmä: | Stage three of the European Monetary Union (or EMU) will be starting as scheduled on January 1, 1999. The new currency area for which the name "Euroland" has been established, will comprise of the EU countries except United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark and Greece. There is convergence in mainly nominal terms. Monetary policy: Expansionary stance. European Central Bank: Monetary targeting or inflation targeting ? Fiscal policy: Further consolidation necessary. Wage policy: Labour markets need more flexibility. Outlook: Domestic demand gains momentum. The issues mentioned are dealt with in more detail in the article. |
