| Tiivistelmä: | In 1997 private consumption was the main engine behind economic activity. Consumers' expenditure rose by around 4.6% last year after rising by 3.6% in 1996. Durable goods spending growth continued to outspace that for non-durable goods and services. Consumer spending is set to continue to support activity in 1998. Private consumption is forecast to rise by 3.7% in 1998 and by 2.2% in 1999. Medium term growth will remain healthy but significantly lower than during the 1980s boom. |
