Tiivistelmä:Technological progress plays a central role in economic growth. There is today a large body of literature analyzing the pattern and determinants of technological progress in terms of total factor productivity (TFP) growth. Productivity is considered here as an outcome of technology, i.e., a change in technology will eventually be reflected in the productivity index. The present study draws on research that has emerged with respect to the impact of openness on TFP growth. The purpose of the paper is to explore three different ways in which the degree of openness can affect the TFP growth rate. First, there is a possibility of spillover effects of a new technology. Second, competition in the form of openness will affect the incentives to innovate. Third, competition also encourages industrial evolution in terms of the entry and exit of firms.
