Tiivistelmä:Managers who struggle with implementing teams across cultures can use metaphor as a tool to unlock teaming expectations and guide teaming practice. The authors' comprehensive cross-cultural research in five firms across four regions of the world uncovered five metaphors people use when they talk about teamwork: sports, military, family, community and associates. In this article, the authors describe how these metaphors illuminate a person's understanding about teamwork, and also how the language involved in the metaphor communicates their desires about teaming practices. This link, between the language of the metaphor and the expectation for the team, helps to illustrate the manner in which team members have very different expectations about teamwork.
