Tiivistelmä:Earlier studies, including empirical evidence, on social responsible driven closedowns have identified a phenomenon called the closedown effect. This means that during the organizational closedown process there occur an increase in productivity. The authors consider this effect as a result of the closedown decision. A study of four non social responsible closedown cases is presented to test the hypotheses of the authors. A need for an analytical distinction between the phrases ‘advanced notice period’ and ‘countdown period’ is identified in the article. The authors conclude that the productivity increase effect is likely to occur during the secondary ‘countdown period’, and that the Studding case, which has the longest time period, provides the strongest support for this. Suggestions for future research are also presented.
