Tiivistelmä: | Taxicab (hereafter as: taxi) cruising in a city's streets to taxis licensed by that city are restricted by exclusive cruising regulations (as: regs.) which create inefficiencies in metropolitan (as: metro) areas comprising multiple municipalities. It is shown in this paper that substituting metro regs. for municipal ones can benefit consumers without hurting service producers. The theoretical results are applied to the taxi market in the adjacent U.S. cities of Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Data on taxi crossings btw. both cities are used to estimate the effects of merging both cities' taxi fleets. The results can be extended to other metropolitan taxi markets. |
