The right balance is examined between investing in vertical integration and encouraging the development of process technology among independent suppliers. Current opinions about vertical integration is criticized. Factors determining success in assembly, subassembly and components manufacturing are described. Innovations in distribution and marketing are examined. The most dramatic gains in quality, price, and flexibility are found to be at the subassembly and component levels. R and D costs and margins are analyzed at the different levels. The policy of vertical integration is evaluated. |
