| Tiivistelmä: | Traditional ABC analysis ranks the importance of inventory items using cost-volume or dollar criteria. Other criteria such as lead time, obsolescence, repairability have also to be taken into account. Such criteria may be in conflict with one another or with cost-volume measures. To reconcile these conflicts requires appropriate analytical approaches (goal programming, some heuristic procedures, matrix representation of multiple criteria). Some reclassification of items which do not fit directly into the ABC categories may be necessary. Three illustrative examples are given. An application of this approach in a Mexican manufacturing company is dealt with in detail and the results and benefits to the firm are discussed. |
