Tiivistelmä:The problems of today's network users are reviewed. The network manager's job is analyzed. The lack of generally accepted communication standards and some basic incompatibility issues are discussed. IBM's NetView (one of the de facto standards) is described and compared to other vendors' products. IBM has opened the door to multivendor communications management, but not to mixed vendor computer systems. The real solution is Open Systems Interconnection (OSI). The OSI working group met to refine network management standards in 1987. The OSI Management Framework will specify how management information gets transported from its origin to its target. It allows interconnection between systems, and it is vendor independent.
