VERTICAL INTEGRATION
Kieli:eng
Tiivistelmä:The rise of the Research Laboratories of Aluminium Company of America to a leading innovator in metallurgy and electrochemistry is described. The development of its research pattern is analysed. The successfully pursued strategy of vertical integration, the fundamental research problems, the conflicts over the quality control and inter-functional coordination are discussed. The role of Francis Frary, the "pipe-fitting chemist" is pictured who transformed a commitment to research into reality. His efforts were rewarded in the late 1920s when Alcoa Laboratories were reconstituted and relocated. Owing to his impact during the Great Depression Alcoa expanded. Alcoa achievements in 2nd World War were remarkable, too.
