Tiivistelmä:It is denied that the traditional "peasant model" - which assumes rural smallholders to be exclusively or overwhelmingly dependent on farming for their livelihood - adequately reflects the present situation in Third World countries. Drawing on the results of the surveys of rural hamlets and households in Western Guatemala, it is pointed out that small "peasants" find agriculture provides an insufficient livelihood and they survive only by pursuing non-farm activities as well. Most of these petty producers are nevertheless caught in a poverty trap formed by the narrowness of the market and their lack of access to marketing channels.
