Tiivistelmä: | In San Jose, California, in the Silicon Valley, a chemical contamination occurred and the drinking water was polluted. The source was a manufacturing plant owned by Fairchild Semiconductor. A leak was found in the underground storage tank of the major high-tech firm. These firms were under a heavy public pressure to explain what they were doing to prevent any further leaks. Now the firms faced not only the technical problem but a public relations nightmare. They realized that it was both their firms' and public interest to develop new industry standards to prevent future leaks. The need for new government standards also arose. Some possible solutions to these problems are discussed and proposals are made. |
