Tiivistelmä:The U.K. debate about the continued existence of the honours degree classification (hereafter as: h-d-class.) led to a survey of the assessment regulations (here as: a-regs.) in 35 varied higher education institutions. There was found considerable variation in the way in which h-d-class. is determined, and also in the handling of weak student performances. Such variability (as: var-ty.) , deriving from a system in which institutional autonomy is on the front, raises a question about fairness as to the treatment of students. A brief look is made at the var-ty. in a-regs. in the U.S. and Australia.
