| Tiivistelmä: | The research shows firms expanding abroad in order to source unique knowledge. It is suggests that firms use a knowledge sourcing (here as: knw-srng.) strategy to 'catch up' with competitors and to get 'technical diversity'. This study suggests that firms also use knw-srng. to reduce their next generation R&D costs - that firms would seek out similar R&D activity to combine with their own. Based on unique data that covering several countries where firms from United States invest, the importance of these explanations is tested. Measuring knowledge through patent stocks, it is found that country-industries with larger stocks and greater technical similarity to the U.S. are more attractive. The findings suggest that an important explanation for firms investing abroad is using similar R&D efforts of others to overcome fixed R&D cost hurdles. |
