| Tiivistelmä: | The article considers they key drivers of the extensive economics reforms in Latin America during the 1990s. The locus of concentration is on the Washington Consensus and the increased political stability. The key developments and results of the reforms in the areas of privatization, foreign investment and trade liberalization are examined in the article. The author considers how the opening up of the regional economies led to the penetration and increased ownership of multinational corporations in various business sectors, how the share of the public sector shrank and how the local firms adapted to this new situation. Further, some key structural changes that took place in the labour market are also presented in the article. The article concludes with an exploration of the key challenges that are facing the regional economies in the near future. |
