Tiivistelmä:Education policy of today relates to the desire to extend higher education (HE) provision to less advantaged groups. This paper asserts that a key behavioural obstacle to widening participation lies in the erroneous belief persisting among potential entrants from disadvantaged backgrounds (here as: bckgrds.) as to their capabilities of succeeding within the HE environment. This 'false uniqueness' thesis is tested using a sample of 127 new U.K. undergraduates. It is found that students drawn from lower social class bckgrds. consistently underestimated their abilities in relation to the overall cohort.
