| Tiivistelmä: | This article examines the determinants of new venture creation across industries and locations for 103 Italian provinces in 1997-2003. Taking into account differences in regional opportunities across industries, we examine the effect of various factors, including policy initiatives on new firm formation in manufacture, retail and wholesale, hotel and restaurant industries. Our results imply that areas with industrial districts are attributed by higher start-up rates in manufacturing and that wage costs prevent entry in this industry. Firm entry in commercial sectors seems to be higher in large cities and areas with powerful economic progress. For hotels and restaurants it is found that tourism positively affects new firm formation. No significant effects are found of recently introduced regional laws contributing to new firm formation in Italy. |
