Tiivistelmä:This article discusses higher education in UK in terms of the public-private distinction. Following a historical exploration of the meaning of public and private and other related terms, their currency during the post-war period in the UK higher education system is explored. It is suggested that the contemporary UK higher education system could be seen as suffering from the worst of both worlds, trapped between the conflicting pressures of privatization and nationalisation.
