Tiivistelmä:This paper deals with fathers and fatherhood (hereafter as: f-hood) as an 'absent presence' in leisure (here as: lsr.) studies (here as: l-studs). Examined is the underplaying of fathers and f-hood in l-studs, referring especially to the lsr.-related literatures pertaining to lsr. and gender, lsr. and family, and sport and masculinity. 'Fathers' are suggested not to have been recognised as a subject of enquiry within lsr. and sports research. Also, the complexity and diversity of family situations within which f-hood is practised is suggested to have been neglected. The paper suggests that the study of f-hood can contribute to l-studs. through improved understanding of men's lsr. experiences and the role of lsr. in men's lives, contributing further on to established traditions etc. The paper is concluded by suggesting that studying f-hood 'through the lens of leisure' also offers the opportunity to demonstrate the wider contribution of lsr. research.
