Tiivistelmä:Sokaiya, or extortioners, have much influence in Japanese businesses, which raises issues not just of bribery but more fundamentally of corporate governance and transparency in the conduct of business. Despite the fact that there are some culturally related reasons why Japanese companies give in to the demands of extortionists, the practice does not seem justified. The pracitice is deep-rooted in society, it is geuinely unavoidable as a condition of doing normal business. The only way that sokaiya can be eradicated is by encouraging companies to adopt a more open culture of managment and by motivating shareholders to exercise their right to know.
