Tiivistelmä:This introductory article of the themed section presents a general overview of previous work examining the use of metaphors (henceforth as: mtphs.) in organizational (as: org-al.) research. Work in org-al. theory (OT) and org-al. communication (OC) generally features prescriptive mtphs. Research in org-al. development (OD) tends to use mtphs. for intervention in individual and group decision-making whereas studies of org-al. (OB) emphasize the mtphs.-in-use within individuals' sensemaking accounts of critical events. With these differences in focus, the form of mtphs. analysis also differs across these contexts.

This themed section's contents of other articles as follows:
"Methodology by Metaphor: Ways of Seeing in Painting and Research" by M.J. Hatch and D. Yanow, p. 23-44;
"Understanding Organizations through Embodied Metaphors" by L. Heracleous and C.D. Jacobs, p. 45-78.
