| Tiivistelmä: | Many European observers underrate the strategic competitiveness of Japanese firms due to the recent crises. In this paper, the authors show that both the bubble economy and the subsequent burst of the bubble were temporary events in the development of Japanese firms only. Based on the Kaisha-Databank containing 104 leading Japanese corporations quoted on the Tokyo stock exchange, the paper analyzes the investment activity, personnel costs and profitability, and the capital structure and finance of Japanese firms during the period from 1985 to 1999. The paper is of interest for all firms that compete with Japanese firms. The paper uses simple ratio analysis as a research method. It provides insight into the wealth of information available for research on Japanese corporations in the Kaisha Data Bank. |
