| Tiivistelmä: | This paper aims to investigate what extent of households' budget constraints prevent tourism participation. The study is based on a sample of Spanish households drawn from the European Community Household panel. The findings reveal that budget constraints are binding for a high percentage of Spanish households. In addition, the households' probability affording a holiday is not just depending on their level of income, but on more complex appraisal of their financial situation including variables such as saving capability and employment stability. It is also found that non-financial factors such as age, level of education and health status determine households' perceptions of their budget constraints on participation in tourism. |
