| Tiivistelmä: | Europe's Economic and Monetary Union began on 1 January 1999. National units of account of the 11 "Euroland" countries became non-decimal fractions or sub-denominations of the euro, and the European Central Bank (ECB) took over from the national monetary authorities responsibility for the setting of the short-term interest rate. At the same time the Stability and Growth Pact is intended to constrain the ability of national governments to run excessive fiscal deficits. |
