Tiivistelmä:Japanese industry is characterized by close and extensive links between manufacturers and their parts suppliers. USA industry is changing. More work is being sub contracted; longer-term relationships are being developed with fewer suppliers; suppliers are being given more design responsibilities; and there is more monitoring of suppliers' quality. These changes, moving USA business practices closer to Japanese business practices, recognize the unquestionable success of Japanese methods of organising production. The structure of incentives offered to supplier firms in Japan is examined and with USA solutions. Pricing policies are assessed. The informational benefits of decentralisation are considered. The use of bidding competition is suggested.
