Tiivistelmä:The possibility that intended strategies can lead to unintended consequences is well known. The authors consider this phenomenon by using an extensive real-time analysis of planned change implementation. The locus of concentration is the social process in the interaction between middle managers, who are regarded as the change recipients as they are trying to understand the change interventions. The authors explain both the unintended and intended consequences of change processes by describing to what degree the lateral informal sense making among the recipients affect these consequences. By doing this the unpredictable nature of strategic change will be illustrated. The main conclusion in the article is the issue of the extent to which it is possible for managers to affect the recipientsÂ’ interpretations that evolve during the process of change.
