Tiivistelmä:The rising dispersion of industry wages in the United States over the period 1970-87 is documented and analyzed using establishment data sources for the economy as a whole, the manufacturing sector, and the service sector. About 60 p.c. of the rise of interindustry wage dispersion can be attributed to competitive market factors, such as changes in sectoral demographic and occupational mix, and changes in the regards to workers with different attributes. However, noncompetitive factors also seem to play an important part in this trend. The most important noncompetitive factor is a strong link between the long-term trends in industry wages and productivity growth, which appears to stem largely from rent-sharing behaviour among industries.
