| Tiivistelmä: | This qualitative analysis deals with gender plays in Swiss internet relay chats. In previous studies, feminist theorists have seen internet relay chats as a gender-dissolving platform, whereas linguists have pointed out that in the form of discourse styles and patterns gender does in fact also exist in virtual reality. The findings of this analysis indicate that gender does indeed matter in internet relay chats, but the construction of gender in chats is not limited to male or female discourse patterns nor the use of male or female screen names only. In IRCs, gender is put on stage and made into queer plays, which are limited by time and space. |
