Tiivistelmä:This article deals with neo-institutional theory and comparative institutional (henceforth as: inst-al.) analysis in order to compare the influence of different inst-al. environments on corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies of European firms. Based on a dataset from European firms, it is found that firms from the more liberal market economies of the Anglo-Saxon countries score higher on most CSR dimensions than firms in the more coordinated market economies (CMEs) of Continental Europe. This result gives support to the view of voluntary CSR practices in liberal economies as being a substitute for institutionalized (here as: inst-zed.) forms of stakeholder participation. Meanwhile, CSR tends not to mirror more inst-zed. forms of stakeholder coordination. Instead in CMEs, CSR often takes on more implicit forms. This analysis also shows national inst-al. and sectoral-level factors having an asymmetric effect, strongly influencing the likelihood of firms adopting 'minimum standards' of CSR, but having little influence on the adoption of 'best practices'.
