Tiivistelmä:This study explores the Australian DVD industry using a data set of retail sales for more than 44,800 titles from 1997 to 2007. Based on a sub-sample of 760 titles also receiving a theatrical (here as: thr-al.) release (as: rls/s.) uncovers that the DVD revenue (as: rvn/s.) distribution has thicker tails than the thr-al. rvn/s. distribution. This implies that the top-ranked DVDs earn a greater share of rvn/s. than their thr-al. counterparts. A rvn/s. comparison reveals both a high degree of correlation btw. the two markets and also a non-linear relationship that is increasing at higher thr-al. rvn/s. levels. This finding is consistent with a word-of-mouth momentum effect and more institutional flexibility in the DVD market. The high levels of correlation are present across all genres/ratings, being stronger for large rls/s. titles. Finally, a seemingly unrelated regression structure is proposed to jointly consider the two markets, shown to be empirically valid.
