| Tiivistelmä: | Crises represent moments when sensemaking is unsuccessful. Official post-crisis analysis reports re-establish sensemaking patterns. Whereas scholars go along with the narrative basis of post-crisis sensemaking, the means of meaning recreation about the confusing events have not been fully investigated. To fill this gap, empirical data are drawn from the series of investigations taking place after the sudden and deadly heat wave in France in the summer of 2003. Utilizing tools from narratology, this article analyses how these reports restore meaning by addressing the questions of What happened? Was it foreseeable? and Who is responsible? The essential narrative choices implied are mapped and a typology of crisis plots is shown. Building on this typology, the article demonstrates successive reports progressively building a focused, simplified story about the crisis. Methodological and practical implications for scholars and practitioners are also discussed using inquiry reports for research and learning. |
