Tiivistelmä:In the 1980s, divestment and restructuring were the business focus in the USA but whether these actions have always created value is disputed by recent evidence. It is indicated that companies undertaking divestment show abnormal increases in their stock prices for some time after initial action. These increases are justified in many cases by increased efficiency, productivity etc. However, some divestments create real inefficiencies, destroying shareholder value. Bad divestitures can be classified into three groups: those undertaken for the wrong reason, those that are done as a last ditch attempt to boost stock prices and those that are not grounded in good strategic logic or are not implemented properly.
