| Tiivistelmä: | Pharmaceutical firms are critically dependent on continuing flows of innovative products for long term survival, profitability and maintenance of competitive position. A portfolio risk matrix which includes technical risk and market risk variables is presented. The R and D effort is divided into four phases. In order to a test model for assessing the risk in a company's research portfolio, in-depth interviews with three British multinational companies were carried out and some published data were studied. Some interesting differences between the companies were detected in terms of the overall risk profiles, in market risk, and in technical risk. The usefulness of the model in R and D risk analysis is emphasized. |
